About the Jamaican Roast Fish

After the jerk pork and jerk chicken, roast fish is maybe the third most popular street food in Jamaica. However, the roast fish can be quite expensive so is sold only in some popular areas.

It takes skill to prepare your fish and your ingredients have to be on point.

Roast fish today is not what it used to be in years gone by. Previously, fish was just placed on a piece of zinc on hot coals and when it was cooked, you dunk it in some salt water. There were no spices used and most people would use the sea water as their dunking sauce. Personally, I prefer the old fashioned method except for the sea water part. I would make my own salted water concoction and add some pepper.

These days the roast fish is prepared with lots of spiced and stuffing. Placed in a foil paper in a grill and steamed to perfection.

Roast fish isn't served with anything in particular but just in case you want a side, you can get festival or bammies with your fish. Like the steamed fish, the roast fish is also priced according to sizes; small, medium large or by the pound.
