About Jamaican Steamed Fish

A very popular dish in Jamaica, steamed fish is really more like a light fish stew. The place most known for it's steamed or fried fish is Healthshire Beach. People will drive miles upon miles to go get some seafood there, well I can imagine, since the seafood come fresh out of the sea right there.

Some restaurant owners even have you pick out your own fish. The food is sold by the the size of the fish. So you can order a 1/2 lb or 1 lb fish.

Bammy is the usual starch that is served with the fish but if you don't like bammy then for some boiled banana, yam and dumplings. on rare occasions the housewife will make rice to be served with the steamed fish. Personally I like my fish with boiled bananas or bammy. But steamed fish without some sort of steamed veges like the okra and carrots is not really steamed fish at all.

You can make you steamed fish as simple as you like or elaborate as you wish. Add more vegetables or no vegetables at all.

You can also choose to slice the pepper to make the sauce spicy, but remember that Jamaican scotch bonnet peppers are hot, hot, hot!
